Hershel "Woody" Williams

Bay Veterans Foundation wishes to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Hershel "Woody" Williams, a true American hero, and the last Medal of Honor recipient of WWII. 

Bay City welcomed Mr. Williams on September 30, 2017 when he dedicated the first Michigan Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, located in Battery Park. 

Woody established a private foundation for the express purpose of paying tribute to the families of those who gave their lives in service to our Country. With a goal having a monument located in all 50 states there are now over 100 located in every state and one US Territory, and another 70 plus, are under construction.

A spry, humorous gentleman, he had a way of making one feel like a friend at first meeting. He was very humble, and as he spoke at the dedication he stressed that the recognition of those who suffered the loss of a loved one "wasn't about me, it's about them".
